The ladybird cavalry

World Cup Fever has struck big time in our household and apart from watching football, grilling and drinking beer, life has sort of been on hold of late. Good times!
On the gardening front I am beginning to win the war against the aphids. I have read everywhere that you should try and attract ladybirds to the garden to eat them. All well and good if you know what attracts them, perhaps little neon signs or billboard stickers, but I suspect the answer is aphids! – So I hatched a ladybird kidnapping plot. We went into the fields hunting ladybirds to release in our garden. We were quite successful and in the captivity jar on the way home they started to mate. We released them on our apple tree, and I am now happy to report that the aphid invasion seems to be under control. Ladybird larvae have also been spotted and these little beasties also seem to have an appetite for the aphids as well.

Later today we travel to Köln to watch France v Togo. It’s great to be able to see a World Cup game live, and the Juniorette is very excited, not only because of the game, but also because we will stay overnight with her Godparents.

HA! I watched the game last night and thought of you. Why is it when someone I know is at a televised game in a crowd of thousands upon thousands I always try to look real close and see them? I can't believe France pulled that out. It was a great game, huh? :) You got a winner.

So ladybirds are ladybugs? Man, british english kills me. Every time some in class says, "but I thought you were supposed to say . . ." I always blame british English.

The first half of the game was good, but the second was all about France. I went to bed in 80th minute. Were there many Togo fans?

I love the way you're handling the aphid problem. Just FYI, I think ladybirds can be ordered from specialty garden stores - check with Dehner.

Spam - Die you manual spam poster!......you are deleted....Goodbye!

Maribeth - Ot must have been a manual spam poster! We all had a great time at the game! :)

Inactualfact - I think the French for Togo is infact Togo (I tink its a former French Colony!). They had a great bunch of supporters at the game! :)

Naked nerd - There seems to be a lot more aphids this year. I guess it was because May was so wet. Hope your wife wins the battle! :)

Tara - They were giving each other piggie back rides! :) I got you the most fantastic souvener but lost it on the way home! :(

Lillian - It was fun catching them, if a bit tricky as we always found them on stinging nettles and thistles! :)

Elle - We were actually on telly. If you freeze frame 18 mins 11 seconds into the game you can actually see us. But you need to know where to look! :) It was a great game. We had great seats and were really close to the pitch! :)

Claire - Ladybirds sounds much better I think! :) The game was great and there were a lot of Togo fans who were in party mood. It was a great atmosphere! :)

Karen - Ladybirds via mail order. Now that is something! - I am going to buy a ladybird house which encourages them to overwinter. I might even try and buy some mail order as well now! :)

Haddock, you are nothing but a ladybird pimp. You disgust me. Are you wearing gold chains and sporting an ornamental cane?

Naked Nerd - Yeah the Germans look good and Argentina not so good. England are through but they played terrible again. I think I rather prefer England losing but playing good football, than how it is at the moment! watching them is torture for me! :)

Capgas - Your fashion spies have obviously been following me! :)

Canadianswiss - It's life in the fast lane here in Marburg! ;)

Oleoleoleole - we three also where looking for you on tv, and boy blue said, he saw you, but I don't really believe him ... Must have been so great to be at a real match! Our aphids are nice, because the trees have their few first fruits and keep them, so everything's o.k. Good to here, that you where successfull concerning that!
