Back to the garden

The weather the last few days has been rather pleasant, so I have been spending quite a bit of time in the garden, potting seedlings, mowing the grass and building a raised vegetable bed for the Juniorette (see photo). It’s nice to get out in the garden again but with all the sun and hard work I forgot how tiring it can be.

Today was the end of the Juniorettes Easter holiday and first day back at school. After school she held the first class of her English course (outside as the weather was so nice). The other kids remarked that they liked it so far and were looking forward to next week.

Mrs H and I attended the gym this morning. The first time for 3 weeks. It was surprisingly not to bad and not too tiring. Later after the garden work I helped out at the football training session for the G-Jugend team (4 – 7 year olds). The actual training wasn’t so bad, but trying to keep a bunch of hyped up kids under control was a nightmare. Glad I never became a school teacher!

Mrs H and I have been discussing where to go for our summer holidays. We thought perhaps Scandinavia, but so far we are undecided, although we have scratched Finland from the list.

Actually, Finland is the most affordable Scandi country.

What's the purpose of a 'raised' veggie garden? Remember, I know nothing about gardening.

Very nice raised bed. I've wanted to do that here, but so far Hubby and I can't agree where to have it. So, it looks like we will just be sticking htem in th eraw earth and I'll be weeding like mad ovr the summer.

LOL, Haddock! The last line made me burst out laughing.

The raised bed is lovely. What kind of veg does she want to grow in it?

Jesus, now I am already starting to hurt the fragile well being of my beloved Finland!, which by the way is not a part of Scandinavia and neither is it habited by Scandinavians.

However, I strongly urge you and the mrs. to visit Finland because I am personally stationed in Canada for another 10 months and the rest of the folks there are quite tame and domesticated.

Mr Haddock, my girlfriend is Finnish & I have visited the country several times & the people there are generaly friendly & welcoming, so don't think that Finlander is by any way typical (I did suspect that he is an ex-pat, as they do tend to overdo the belicose patriotism.)
Also with regards to a suggestion that they are all suicidal, the only time I found this to be the case was when the beer or lonkero was running low.
Glad you took up my suggestion to only blog on gardening, although you did slip up by adding the little joke about Finland.

I told myself that THIS year I was going to have a flower garden, for the first time. Keep in mind that ALL, and I mean all, of my house plants are dead thanks to my handy black thumb!

After two days out in the yard, I am ready to give up. I was introuced to a nice little weed called "Ortica" in Italian. Seems everyone knew about this mean plant BUT me! I touched the darn thing and my hand hurt for 15 hours! Did you know that the word Ortica translates into BURN! It was a "nice" few days in the garden.
Best wishes to you and your garden. Hope you have better luck then me.

J - I must admit I don't really know what is so special about raised veggies beds but they seem to be the in thing :) - I guess it makes contolling the weeds mre effective.

Maribeth - We had problems trying to figure out where to site the bed as well, but we figured it out in the end. I hate weeding as well! :)

Christina - The Juniorettes wants to grow tomatoes, strawberries & peas (basically what she likes to eat!)

Finlander - Please excuse my little joke at the end of the post. I couldn't resist! :) We would actually like to visit Finland one day :)

Capgas - English humour strikes again!

Nordbank - It was time for a garden post, and glad you noticed the joke :)

Cynthia - Be careful with those weeds. Hope your hand gets better soon :)

LOL. Had to laugh at your last sentence. ;-)

I guess all the gardening work had some effect before going the gym. And if I had a raised veggie bed like that, it would probably cover have the lawn we have. So looks like I'll be buying my veggies again this year.

I can now rest easier knowing that there is no special purpose to a raised veggie bed. I thought I might need to add another project to the neverending list.

I think I was the one who mentioned the Finnish suicide rate, so don't hold it against Haddock. Kum by ya! But I really do like the Finns and Finland, so you shouldn't cross it off your list because of that last exchange. Kum by ya!

i love that tiny garden, especially the little posts. They are just too cute and my favorite!

Vacation - I've never been to Finland or Scandinavia, so you must go to produce pics. :) We have the same vacation problems, but the trick for us is that we must stay in Canada.

Canadianswiss - I really must find more time to go to the gym. I really enjoy growing veggies. I'm still experimenting as to which ones work well in our soil type.

Mike - I really want to visit Finland sometime. My comment about scratching Finland off the list was English humour :)

Expat - The little posts look nice but they are a bugger to knock into the ground! - If we go I will definately post pics :)

Naked Nerd - It took a while to get the posts reasonably straight. To get them perfectly straight would have taken forever! :)
