Celtic Tiger
Last night the Haddock Family went to the Frankfurt Festhalle to see the Celtic Tiger show from Michael Flatley. Getting to the Festhalle on time was a bit tricky as there were traffic jams on all roads near the concert hall. In the end we just parked up in a side street and made our way on foot. We made it there just in time, and surprisingly our seats were not as bad as we thought. Mrs H spotted her sisters who were sat across from us and we met up with them during the break.
The show was really good, but there was not as much Irish dancing as I thought there would be. The Juniorette really enjoyed it, even if she did end up staying up very late on a school night. The basic theme of the show was the struggle of the Irish. How they had a bad time from the English, then the mass emigration to the USA, and then how much they have contributed to America. Mrs H noted how old Mr Flatley now seemed, and how he made sure that were no other dancers in the show that could outshine him. Personally I thought he had a tremendous stage presence, and when he was in his prime he must have really been a sight to see.
Overall it was a very enjoyable show, and has really cemented the Juniorette’s desire to learn Irish dancing. On the way out from the Halle she was constantly practicing her Irish dance moves, which drew a lot of smiles from passer-by’s.

You need good legs for Irish Dancing! It wuld definitely stand her in good stead for later. My Mum used to tap dance and even now she's 61, she still has excellent legs!
It sounds like a fun evening.
I had the opportunity to see Michael Flatley some years ago in Munich - he (and the rest of the crew) were absolutely awesome.
I can imagine that the Juniorette's feet were quite inspired ;-)
Ms Mac - Perhaps I should take up tap dancing as well! :)
Maribet - We had a lot of fun :)
Karen - He certainly puts on quite a show! :)
I saw him in Zurich about 5 years ago and was really impressed by his stage presence, too. And you're right, he certainly makes sure NO ONE outshines him :-)
I think every show is directed in the way, that the so-wished guy or girl is the focus of it, and to my opinion, the tribute to Flatleys age of 47 or 48 (!!) was, that he wasn't present too often in the scenes. I agree with you, that he has a very strong stage presence and I think, he has or he allows himself a individual touch of dancing, which makes him unique in the troupe. I found the show a bit kitschy sometimes, but that's the way, how shows work: with exaggerations, which in good shows even though turn to get you to the point of enthusiasm. And I was enthusiastic, it really was one of the greatest evenings I had! Must be a fantastic gift to make so many people feel good and to make such a good job in an age, when not only here in Germany you otherwise get the feeling, that you're to old for good work!
They used to run clips of his show on the Public TV stations in New York during their fund-raising drives (no Telly licenses there) ... seems everybody loves this stuff. It wouldn't be the worst career choice the Juniorette could make.
So I'm in Ireland at the moment, did you know EVERYONE here jigs around like Mr Flatley? It is illegal to even go outside without doing a little tapdance. As I have two left feet, I am finding it very difficult.
Canadianswiss - He certainly is the boss on stage :)
Deepblue - He certainly is very fit for his age and a top flight dancer. It was great to see you at the show :)
Mike - The Juniorette has several career options as a 7 year old. She wants to be a dancer, a professional soccer player, a gardener and a swimming teacher! :)
Naked Nerd - Thats a lot of hours on the road for a show. For us the round trip to frankfurt takes approx 2 hours.
Capgas - Top of the mornin to ya to be sure! A few pints of guiness and you'll be tapping away like Flatley :)
Aww I feel guilty now ..A friend of mine was telling me about seeing the flatley guy..and I made HUGE fun of my friend..
Irish dancing is cool..but I'd prefer it without the huge ego attached
