Eins, Zwei, Polizei

This morning on the train to work I got to see the new German Police uniforms. The Polizei work the same shift times as I do, so my trains to Frankfurt always have a lot of cops travelling on them. The new uniforms are a dark blue which give them a more sinister look compared to the old green uniform, which I thought was quite friendly.

I think the move to change uniforms is wrong, as I think the attitudes of the general public to the Police will slowly change with this new sinister look – and not for the good. But I guess we should be thankful they didn’t go for the black uniform which were used by the SS.

Compared to the picture opposite, the uniforms I saw this morning were a lot darker. All Police Officers in Hessen will have the new uniform by 2008.

I think the police looked a bit like park rangers before, now they look like cabin crew for a very cheap airline. I do think they needed a new look though, they need to command some sort of respect and the green didn't really do that.
Why are the british bobbies the only police taht have to wear such silly hats?

i saw you won on the battles, well done!

they look like pilots to me.

Our local cops wear dark blue --and some wear black. Talk about sinister.

Funny you should mention the “sinister look” of the blue uniforms. I wrote something about this a few years ago, comparing the obvious differences between German and American cops.

I suppose we should just be happy they are not wearing black with a skull and cross bones on the hat.

I agree. They look more like airline employees.
I am just sad that the green uniforms are going away - it means that we bikers can no longer refer to them as the "Schnittlauch Patroullie". :-)

It's not a very nice blue, is it? When they said they were changing to blue I expected something spiffier. This is just boring. I don't even know if I'd recognize one on the street now. But then again, the old olive green and mustard yellow wasn't really my thing either. I mean who looks good in that? Maybe I'm forgetting that fighting crime has nothing to do with fashion? :-)

They do look like airline stewards more than cops. Uuum... Are the ties green, or are my eyes playing tricks on me? Wierd.

Eh. Boring blue. Not a bit sinister though.

Most police uniforms in the US are blue and/or gray so it's what I'm used to. Green is for park rangers to me the police in Germany always looked like they wanted me to help prevent forest fires.

Sparky - I knew it was a song or old rhyme but I only know the first line.

Lydia - The French cops wear silly hats, infact they look ridiculus! :)

Mrs Mac - I think in Germany the cops can have hairstyles, facial hair, piercings, however they like.

Kate - They do look like arline uniforms

Just another - black with the totenkopf would not be good :)

Foo - Thanks for stopping by :)

Nordbank - I hope they serve Vodka & Orange as well! :)

Karen - I actually sat next to a cop in the new uniform on the train on the way home from work that day, and on closer inspection I really do think they are wearing airline uniforms :)

Christina - I guess they are just trying to look good. It seems nowadays its more about the image than getting the job done! :)

Viernach - Your secret is safe with me ;) For the women officers to run down criminals on the street they should be wearing mini-skirts - It's much more practicle! :)

Canadianswiss - I looked again, and the ties do look green. The police obviously haven't upgraded their ties yet. :)

Dixie - I quite liked the ranger/friendly look. I guess in the early morning the blue looked darker and more sinsister, but after seeing it again it does look boring and airline like.

Oh yeah. Those two look like they want me to put my seatback in the upright position and make sure my tray table is in its locked position.

I like the new blue and white police cars though. I think the normal (or shall we now say old?) green is horrible.

Dixie - The new colour scheme for the cars does look better :)

Sparky - Thanks for the rest of the rhyme. I'll teach it to the Juniorette :)

James - That's a bad move with the taxi's, because with the usual tan colour they are easy to identify.

I live in the Washington DC area and there has been a shift too. Many law enforcement agencies have started to shift to black clothing for their special units. Many law enforcement agencies have changed from brown or lighter shades of blue to darker or grayed-out shades of blue. Additionally, more law enforcement vehicles have gone from the traditional white or light colors to black and similar dark colors.

A little creepy.
