Scary Photo
Well today is Halloween. The time of scary faces and pumpkin heads. So here is a pumpkin head photo (Click to enlarge) from a few weeks ago. The left side of my face is very swollen and it came on all of sudden. No pain was involved but I couldn't close my jaw. I hot footed it to the Doctors to discover I had a Speichelstein, which in layman's terms is a stone blocking one of my saliva glands.
It's quite funny really as I don't remember eating and stones that day. The swelling had got a lot bigger by the time I reached the Doctors surgery, and I joked with the receptionist that my face was about to explode. She didn't laugh, but I guess that's a German humour thing. Anyway the remedy for the situation was to chew gum and eat lemon flavoured sweets. Happy Halloween.

Whew! Glad there wasn't any pain, I've never heard of Speichelstein or an English equivalent.
Honestly, I would have thought you were really into bubble gum.
Happy Halloween! Booooo!
good lord that looks painful :(
Yeah stimulate the glands mister! Hope you get to feeling better soon :D
Poor old Mr Haddock. I cna think of worse cures than eating chewies and lemon sweets though.
Strange! I had an absessed tooth that came on that quick, and caused swelling like that. And of course the ever common wisdom teeth that made me look like a chipmunk. But this definitely takes the cake for weird!
A friend of mine in Louisiana had the same thing happen over the summer and she was given the same remedy advice to cure it...and it worked!
She didn't laugh because she was wondering what sort of mess she was going to have to clean up. They are very literal, these Germans ... if you say your face is going to explode, they are going to look for a drop-cloth.
It does look painful. I've never heard about Speichelstein before. Happy to hear that the "medication" worked!
Hope you had a great Halloween!
Quite a cheeky picture there, mate.
Heza - I had never heard of this either. Hope you had a good halloween :)
Belinda - Amazingly it wasn't painful at all! :)
Mrs Mac - If only all illness could be cured with sweeties! :)
Naked Nerd - Stones play havoc with the weight as well! :)
Maribeth - It was weird. Both Mrs H and I had never heard of it before :)
Dixie - I'm sort of glad someone else has had this as well and that the remedy was the same. When my doctor first told me I thought he was joking! :)
Mikeb - I wondered what she was doing with all those cloths! ;)
Canadianswiss - Best medication I've ever taken. Hope you had a good Halloween as well! :)
Hamish - Indeed! I believe you have some English humour sir! :)
Oh lordy, I had that once too and it was NOT fun, but it didn't swell up as much as yours did. The lemon sweets worked for me as well.
I'm laughing at Mike's explanation of the nurses reaction! :-)
Your wife didn't think to make pumpkin pie? Good wife, she is. :)
